A local social enterprise company has challenged the city’s youth to step up and become changemakers in their community.

Volinspire, a volunteer-based social media platform that started in Kelowna, put out the call to action, and is backing its challenge with cold, hard cash.

With its #WEareKelowna photo contest, the company is asking young people to share their stories of giving back to the community.

“Our whole purpose and goal is to continue to engage youth,” explains Volinspire’s Jeff Hoffart.

“[We want youth] to be able to connect with the community, get involved, share their stories and inspire each other, and really just do some good in the community.”

Any young people inspired to participate simply need to share their stories of what giving back to their community means to them. By sharing their pictures or stories on Volinspire with the tag #WEareKelowna or @WEareKelowna, they are automatically entered.

For every approved submission, Volinspire will donate $20 to the WE charity (up to $3,000). The three contest winners are in for some even bigger prizes, including the grand prize of a $1,000 donation to the charity of the winner’s choice.

Hoffart says the team at Volinspire have left the contest fairly open to all manner of submissions. All that really matters is that the entrant shares a photo of what they feel giving back to the community looks like.

“We’re recognizing that there’s so many more ways to do good than simply volunteering,” he says.

He suggested gestures as small as buying a Smile Cookie from Tim Horton’s or helping a neighbour are acceptable.

“We just wanted to ask ‘what does giving back look like to you?’ and hope to see a variety of things, because that’s what we’re trying to do. We’re trying to open it up and say ‘you could give donations, you could take food to the food bank, you could do formal volunteerism, but you could also do an act of kindness.’ There are so many ways to help our community.”
