Thirty-two Downtown Kelowna restaurants will be handing out free food and wine this Saturday, as the seventh annual Taste of Downtown Kelowna comes to the city.

Presented by the Downtown Kelowna Association, the event is part culinary showcase, part scavenger hunt and part fundraiser.

Visitors and locals alike get the chance to experience a number of different foods and drinks, from Chinese to Caribbean cuisine, along with several different coffees and teas available throughout the downtown.

Between 12-3 p.m. Sept. 23, 1,000 lucky Taste of Downtown Kelowna passport holders will get the opportunity to explore the city’s many restaurants, grabbing free samples and passport stamps along the way.

Participants who collect five stamps from five different areas of the city can even drop off their passports for a chance to win one of three prizes.

The drop-off deadline for completed passports is 4 p.m. Sept. 23, at one of the Downtown Kelowna booths. Winners will be announced on the organization’s social media channels Sept. 28.

Passports for the event went on sale earlier this month, and sold out quickly. They went on sale for a minimum $5 donation to the Central Okanagan Food Bank, and in the end netted $5,522.40.

“We are so excited to make this donation to the food bank,” says Ryan Watters, the communications manager at the Downtown Kelowna Association.  “Last year, with a $2.00 donation we raised over $3,000, which helped a number of people in our own backyard.  We are excited to see what $5,000 does.”
