Kelowna’s Lake City Casino is pouring millions of dollars into renovations this fall

This fall’s millions of dollars of renovations at Kelowna’s Lake City Casino will see a pair of new restaurants grace the gaming floor, but no changes to the the games themselves.

Construction is beginning on a 132-seat MATCH Eatery and Public House at the casino, as well as another new restaurant called The Buffet.

The two new restaurants will replace the existing Gateway 21 entertainment space and Grove Bistro restaurant. The renovations will also include some updates to the casino floor to accommodate the new eateries.

Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Limited, which runs Lake City Casino, says it is investing $3.6 million in the renovations. A City of Kelowna building permit says the casino has contracted Norson Construction Ltd. for the job, and will spend $1.6 million on construction.

Clarissa Pruden, the casino’s general manager, says preliminary work has already begun on the new restaurants, and that they should be finished by the winter of 2017.

“If all goes well, Santa will be bringing me restaurants for Christmas,” she says.

Tanya Gabara, Gateway Casinos and Entertainment’s director of public relations, says the new restaurant in Kelowna is part of a “very aggressive growth and development strategy” that Gateway is implementing at its properties across the country.

The goal, she says, is to bring the company’s “signature brands” into every one of its 26 properties, and consolidate the overall branding of its casinos.

She pointed to the recent relocations and rebranding to Cascades Casinos in Penticton and Kamloops as an example.

While Gabara said Gateway’s goal is to eventually align the branding of all its properties, there are no immediate plans to rebrand Lake City Casino in Kelowna.

Meanwhile, she said, plunking an entire new restaurant into their gaming space will mean a bunch of new jobs in Kelowna, although she couldn’t name specific numbers.

New jobs aside, Pruden said she remains very excited to see the new spaces finished.

“I am super excited about this refreshing of this site. I think it’s going to be an excellent addition to Downtown Kelowna’s core entertainment offering,” Pruden says.
