International Gateway Kelowna is throwing open the doors of its new, Bernard Avenue campus tomorrow, giving anyone interested the chance to get a peek inside.

The international language school has been operating in Kelowna for more than a decade, but co-owner Dale Lockhart says that, until recently, their somewhat obscure location kept them pretty much off the radar.

“We didn’t realize that a lot of people in town didn’t know where we were, or who we were, or if we were even there, because we kind of got lost upstairs,” he said of the school’s former home on the second floor of the Towne Centre Mall.

But Lockhart says the school’s move has turned into a blessing in disguise.

“It’s been great so far, we’ve had people walking in off the street. They didn’t know what we did or who we were,” he said. “I guess the awareness has helped quite a bit”

When the school’s lease expired earlier this year, Lockhart and his partner Coco Chong He had just a few months to find something new.

After a mad scramble they landed in their new location, at 618 Bernard Ave (across from the Safeway), and immediately began their busy July-August season.

Now, Lockhart says, things have settled down, and he’s anxious to let the community in, both to show off the new campus and to give people a better idea of what IGK does.

The school’s Sept. 13 open house will run from 4-7 p.m., featuring a wine and cheese reception, tours of the new space, and demonstrations of some of the school’s new programming.
