More work is scheduled to start at The Reach, the massive community development Thompson Rivers University plans to build on its land.

Kelson Group, a Kamloops real estate company, will build a multi-storey rental building on the development site’s second parcel of land.

The company’s proposed, 5,200-square-metre development will be a four-storey, multi-family rental building located on the north side of TRU’s Old Main building, at 895 University Dr.

Kelson Group is a local family owned company that has been managing properties for 40 years.

“TRU is a very important part of Kamloops, and we are excited to have the opportunity to contribute to its growth by developing an exciting new rental building in the heart of the campus,” said Jason Fawcett, the vice president of Kelson Group.

Construction is expected to start next spring, with a goal of opening by September 2019.

Earlier this year, the TRU Community Trust announced it had secured its first development partner for the “master-planned community.”

Cape Construction has already begun work on its four-storey, 5,300-square-metre condo development, which officially marked the beginning of Phase 1 of The Reach.

Over the next 25 years, The Reach will become a walkable, urban community containing 3,500 multi-family housing units, and a mix of retail and services on TRU’s endowment lands.

TRU’s plan for the community includes features like strata housing, student residences, retail shops, restaurants, professional offices, and student assembly space.

The hope is that, once it’s complete, The Reach will enhance the vibrancy of campus life and make enough profit to funnel back into university programs, research and scholarships.
