Kelowna’s BNA Brewing hopes to undertake a massive expansion centered around a bowling alley.

A Kelowna brewery is looking to combine its brews with bowling, with a proposed expansion centred around a bowling alley.

In July, BNA Brewing Co. asked the City of Kelowna for permission to take on a major expansion that would see a large swath of its second floor transformed into a “six-lane bowling area.”

According to BNA’s development application, the expansion would see the capacity of the craft brewery’s top floor increase from 106 to 243 people.

Most of the new space would be dedicated to the bowling alley, which will be separate but not closed off from the rest of the pub.

BNA plans to outfit each individual lane with its own “living room style area,” where groups can eat while bowling, gather for for “bowling brunches” on the weekend, or rent for private functions.

The rest of the extra space would be given over to offices, washrooms, an indoor bocce lane, dining seating and a bar.

Although the application isn’t explicit, it appears the proposed expansion will occupy the former home of the Flashbacks nightclub.

Before it closed in 2016, Flashbacks was located in the same building as BNA, with its official address at 1268 Ellis St.

BNA’s application lists the location of its expansion as 1250-1298 Ellis St., and states that it “now has the opportunity to acquire more space connected to [its] current lease space.”

The expansion would be confined to the “top floor only” of the pub, meaning there would be no changes to the main floor, patio area, or to its liquor service hours.

City of Kelowna planner Lydia Korolchuk said the application is currently circulating among city staff, and that council will likely get a chance to vote on it in September.

Kyle Nixon of BNA said he wouldn’t comment on the project application until it goes through the proper council process.
