Better bus route to UBCO

Good news is coming for students using transit to get to and from UBC Okanagan and Glenmore.

Service will be improved in September next year, once construction of the extension to John Hindle Drive is complete in the spring.

Currently, Glenmore to UBCO is served by the No. 6 bus, which travels from downtown, along Glenmore Road to Sexsmith and Highway 97.

Once John Hindle Drive is complete, transportation demand supervisor Jerry Dombowsky says transit will be able to provide a more efficient route.

“The new route we are proposing would represent the merger, and repurposing of three different routes, the No. 4 University, No. 7 Glenmore-Orchard Park leg and the existing No. 6 Sexsmith Road service,” said Dombowsky.

“This would create what I would consider a new super route, anchored by major educational institutions at either end. We have UBCO at one end, and Okanagan College and Mission town centre on the other.”

He said the new route would also connect town centres, major shopping and business areas, schools, such as KSS, KLO and the proposed new high school at the former Dr. Knox site, and Parkinson Rec Centre.

Dombowsky says pent up demand has also prompted the addition of Saturday morning, and evening service on the No. 8 University route.

In order to pay for that, Dombowsky says the low performing Upper Brindisi leg of the Quail Ridge route will be eliminated.
