A concrete highrise planned for downtown Kelowna will stretch 20 stories high and house 116 condos sitting atop a parking garage and retail space.

Mission Group plans to build its ELLA development on a plot of land in downtown Kelowna, at the corner of Lawrence Avenue and Ellis Street.

In February the developer bought the property, which is currently a parking lot, from the City of Kelowna, for $2.6 million.

Yesterday Mission Group released new information about the proposed concrete highrise, including renderings of its design concept.

Luke Turri, the vice president of development at Mission Group, said the building will feature retail space across the entire ground floor, with a residential parking garage taking up floors 2-5.

Condos will be built from the sixth floor up.

Turri said the building will give people “an opportunity to live where there has been very limited opportunity in the past.”

“The city’s Downtown Plan encourages more density— getting people to live in the downtown core to create more dynamic daytime and nighttime activity,” he said.

Turri said ELLA will likely be the first of many new developments in the area contributing to the “dynamic” shift in the area around Bernard Avenue in recent years.

He added that Kelowna’s downtown plan calls for developments like ELLA in the area, and Mission Group should only need standard development permits from council to get the project going.

If all goes according to plan, Turri anticipates starting construction next spring.
