Speakers, educators and scholars from across the globe will flock to Kelowna this fall when the city plays host to the first ever Wine and Culinary Tourism Futures Conference.

The conference, which will take place from Oct. 17-20, welcomes both academics and those in the industry for a weekend of sharing ideas and practices on the “transformative potentials of wine and food tourism.”

Its goal, according to John Hull, an associate professor at Thompson Rivers University and the conference co-chair, is to promote dialogue, foster communication and increase collaboration between academia and industry—all on a global scale.

It will feature daily keynote speakers, sessions for both academia and industry, panel discussions and even evening visits to local wine producers and restaurants.

Hull says the four-day conference will be “filled with a strong selection of national and international speakers sharing their stories, including successes based on their experiences in their regions.”

“Transformative tourism marks a paradigm shift for the industry that harnesses the social and environmental consciousness of a new travel market for positive social, economic and environmental change,” notes Donna Senese, an associate professor at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. “By opening a dialogue between the academy, industry, and government actors, this conference will provide a platform to disperse information, broaden our network, mentor emerging scholars and practitioners and encourage new perspectives on best practices and potentials.”
