Renovation work has begun at an infamous West Kelowna strip mall.

After sitting empty for about a decade, work has finally begun at a dilapidated West Kelowna strip mall.

Workers and heavy machinery have been at the former Cattle Country site, at 2528 Main St., for more than a week, demolishing part of the building in preparation for the renovations that will soon take place.

After previous development plans for the property fell through several years ago, the property was sold in late 2015.

In December of 2016, West Kelowna City Council approved a development permit for the property, allowing for the renovation of the gas station and mall that sit on it.

The applicant’s plans call for the demolition and reconstruction of the eastern part of the mall, as well as a completely new gas station on the site of the old one.

The updated mall will contain four commercial units, with one housing a Co-Op convenience store that will be associated with the newly built gas station.

The outside of the building will be updated, and new landscaping will also be installed. There’s no word yet on what is in store for the other three units.

In a report to council concerning the development permit, city staff admitted that “although a gas station is not an ideal use” for the property, redevelopment there is “more consistent” with the Westbank Centre Revitalization Plan than the eyesore that currently sits there.
