BC Tree Fruits is expanding its packing facility in Winfield.

The facility is waiting for final approval from the District of Lake Country to begin construction of an expansion that will allow space for a new apple bagging line.

Should that approval come, the new line would be designed, installed and ready to go before this year’s apple crop is ready for harvest.

Chris Pollock, the marketing manager at BC Tree Fruits, says the new line will expand the facility’s capacity by 30 per cent.

He says its construction and installation will create 66 new jobs in the District of Lake Country and will help “ensure locally grown, premium apples continue to be handled and packed by local employees.”

BC Tree Fruits CEO Stan Swales says the Winfield facility handles most its members’ apples grown around Kelowna and Vernon, and is “imperative to ensure the quality and packing capacity of locally grown apples.”

The Winfield packinghouse is one of four BC Tree Fruits facilities, and only handles apples seasonally, from the fall into the spring.

The other three facilities are located in Kelowna, Oliver and Osoyoos.
