After a “long and arduous approval process,” Kelowna’s Focus College has been granted Approved Centre status  through the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

That designation gives the college the distinction of being first and only approved centre in all of Canada.

It will allow Focus College to begin offering students the Higher National Diploma business management program and the Higher National Diploma Software Development Program.

A Higher National Diploma (HND) is a higher education qualification valid in the United Kingdom and other countries.

The Scottish Qualifications Authority operates on behalf of the Scottish government. It sits at the heart of Scotland’s education system and provides a wide range of internationally recognized qualifications and associated services.

Students attending the HND programs at Focus College will now have access to university acceptance in Australia, Canada, Europe, Hong Kong, New Zealand, South Korea, United Kingdom and the United States.

“I took on the challenge of going through the vigorous process of SQA accreditation because I believe it is very beneficial for Canadians to have access to a globally recognized and standardized qualification,” says Sajjad Ali, the president of Focus College.

“I see SQA as a game changer, particularly in the Canadian private post-secondary education sector [and] I wanted Focus to be the pioneer college in introducing the standardized qualification to the people of B.C. and Canada.”

Three SQA representatives are at Focus College this week providing training on curriculum delivery and marketing to Focus staff.

Focus College was started in 1992 and specializes in business and information technology programs.
