The Okanagan Hockey Academy is putting out a call for billet families in Penticton.

Athletes at the hockey school are lodged with local families around the city, who provide them with a “home away from home.”

OHA marketing co-ordinator Natalie Preston says the ideal billet home is any family that enjoys having young people around the home, “it’s a super rewarding experience,” she said.

“You take on these kids that have really embarked on a huge life adventure, leaving their home to come study and play hockey at the academy.”

Preston says she has been a billet for multiple years, and says the athletes often become a part of your family and act as a good influence on younger children.

She is quick to point out that parents will not need to drive the athletes to school or practice, they are picked up each day by OHA buses, “we don’t expect you to turn life upside down.”

Billet families get seasons tickets to the Vees’ and $650 per month for groceries and utilities.
