The United Way and Pushor Mitchell will host a Day of Caring later this week, giving local companies the chance to give back to not-for-profit organizations in the community.

This spring’s Day of Caring will take place April 7, and will see local companies send groups of employees to organizations across the Central and South Okanagan to help them complete various projects.

Typical projects include things like spring yard clean-up, painting and light construction.

The idea, according to the United Way, is to help local not-for-profits get things finished that might otherwise get ignored. But it’s also about a lot more.

“It’s about a sense of caring through volunteerism and connecting people in the community with different skills, different knowledge, and different backgrounds. It’s about team-building for those employees, who have the chance to learn about the programs and services that the organization offers.

During last year’s event more than 300 employees from seven different companies spent the afternoon at local charities tackling spring cleanup and painting projects.

Their time helped save the not-for-profits thousands of dollars in time and resources.

Kickoff celebrations for this Friday’s event will be held at the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs at 12:30 p.m.
