The Kelowna YMCA’s Jumpstart Employment Essentials program is receiving at boost in federal government funding.
Stephen Fuhr, Member of Parliament for Kelowna-Lake Country, on behalf of the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour announced that the program is receiving $794,476 in federal funding.
“The federal government recognizes the importance of supporting young people in our community overcome barriers to employment,” said Fuhr. “By helping them develop the skills and knowledge they need to gain meaningful employment we are ensuring they have a fair chance at a better future.”
The Government of Canada invests more than $330 million to help people overcome barriers to gain skills and experience to work.
These barriers include challenges faced by recent immigrant youth, youth with disabilities, single parent youth, youth who have not completed high school, Indigenous youth, and youth living in rural or remote areas.
“It can be challenging for youth to make the transition to work and adulthood,” said Allyson Graf, general manager of YMCA Okanagan.
“The Skills Link funding is making it possible for them to do so. This investment in our community is changing the lives of many, helping local youth build a bright future.”
