The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen is raising fees at it’s Penticton, Oliver, Okanagan Falls and Keremeos landfills.

Rates will go up from $95 a metric tonne to $110, also the amount of yard and wood waste that can be brought to the landfills for free will drop from 500kg to 100kg per load.

A recent lifecycle study on the Campbell Mountain Landfill near Penticton shows significant challenges including surface water drainage onto the site, leachate leaving the site and requirements to capture methane gas. The other RDOS landfills are matching the price increase to prevent “landfill shopping” for a better price.

But starting April 1, the hours of the Okanagan Falls facility will expand to include Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. until the end of October.

The extra day was requested by residents in Okanagan Falls and Kaleden, especially to allow the disposal of yard waste. The Regional District will review the daily use at the end of 2017 to determine if the extra day will continue into 2018.
