They knew they had probably done alright, but they couldn’t possibly have guessed they would sweep the podium and watch all eight of their submissions win a medal.

But that’s exactly what happened to Okanagan Spirits yesterday at the World Spirits Awards.

The craft distillery won a whopping five gold medals, along with a silver and a couple of bronzes, at the yearly craft distillery awards ceremony in Germany.

“Chris was literally weighed down in medals with the amazing sweep of eight awards. Talk about owning the podium,” said CEO Tyler Dyck, who is currently at the awards at Asbach Distillery in Rüdesheim am Rhein, Germany with distiller Christopher Burke.

According to Dyck, the crowning achievement among the wins was the repeat gold for the distillery’s exclusive Laird Of Fintry Single Malt Whisky, which is so popular they have to dole out each year through a lottery.

Along with the whiskey, Okanagan Spirits also took home gold for its Taboo Absinthe, Aquavit, Blackcurrant Liqueur and Haskap Liqueur. It nabbed silver for its Rhubarb and bronze for Family Reserve Vodka and Gin de Mononcle.

“As a craft distillery that specializes in producing 100 per cent B.C. spirits, we are proud to keep proving our quality on a global scale and continue to showcase what B.C. and Canada is capable of in the world of craft distilling,” Dyck said.

Okanagan Spirits has had unprecedented success at the World Spirits Awards in the past: so far it is the only distillery in North America to earn the “word class” distinction, and it has twice won distillery of the year.
