Organizers of a B.C. petition to recognize paramedics as an essential service say Vernon’s turnout on Saturday set a provincial record.

Canvassers were set up at the Real Canadian Superstore in Vernon on Saturday, where they were gathering signatures for the initiative, which would provide paramedics with the same collective bargaining rights as firefighters and police officers.

During Saturday’s event, the group collected 1,370 signatures, setting a single-day record for the campaign across the province.

“Local canvassers are extremely grateful for the public support,” said local spokesperson Dean Perry. “We received an amazing 2,707 signatures at three events this last week. We are confident we will reach the required 4,750 signatures in the Vernon Monashee electoral district and 4091 for Shuswap.”

Canvassers will continue setting up shop at the following locations:

  • Tuesdays: Save On Foods, Shops at Polson Park 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Thursdays: Save On Foods, Village Green Centre 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Friday, March 24: Askews Foods in Armstrong 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Askews Foods at 2701 11 Avenue NE in Salmon Arm 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
