The Slopes for Hope SilverStar fundraising event for the Canadian Cancer Society was a major success for the charity.

The March 4 event, sponsored by SilverStar Mountain Resort, raised $17,297, far more than the $5,000 goal.

In all 71 skiers and snowboarders took part in the family-friendly ski-a-thon where teams challenge themselves to ski or snowboard the vertical height of the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest (29,029 vertical feet).

“Our volunteers and community really came out in spades this year to support our event. We were blown away by everyone’s commitment to the cause.” said Sarah Anne Taylor, the society’s giving coordinator. “We just loved watching everyone have fun on the slopes and taking pride in the impact they’ve made for those affected by cancer.”

“Vernon has such an enthusiastic ski and snowboarding community that I felt this event was a perfect fit for the region and a great opportunity to raise funds for a cause that touches us all,” said Christian Ouellette, volunteer event chair.
