Orchard Park shoppers, have no fear: the gift cards are coming.

The Kelowna shopping centre was overwhelmed with response to a free gift card promotion leading up to Christmas, leaving thousands of customers with rainchecks for the $20 cards.

The rainchecks were handed out with a Jan. 31 expiry date, but even though it’s almost the end of February, mall staff have yet to work their way through the backlog.

But they’re getting there.

“Orchard Park’s out of town customers were offered a $20 gift card with the presentation of an ad from their local papers, effective Dec. 15-24; one gift card per day, per customer,” marketing manager Vikki Webster said Wednesday in an emailed statement.

The mall ran out of the promotional cards by Dec. 21.

“Rather than disappoint our out of town customers, we elected to provide rainchecks to our customers for the balance of the promotion,” said Webster. “Due to the holiday timing, we were unable to receive a new shipment of gift cards until early February – despite a rush order.”

Despite rumours to the contrary, the mall is honouring the rainchecks.

People attempting to redeem the rainchecks are being told at customer service to hold on, as staff go alphabetically through their list of people who received them.

“We have been contacting all the customers that were registered for a raincheck. More than 2,500 individuals are registered, and we are making every effort daily to fulfil our customers’ expectations,” said Webster.

The mall expects to work its way through that list by the end of the week.

“We appreciate people’s patience, and in order to ensure that customers have adequate time to pick up their cards, we have extended the deadline for pick up until June 30, 2017,” she added.
