Okanagan wines will be featured prominently when this year’s 39th Vancouver International Wine Festival opens tomorrow.
The festival brings together wine enthusiasts from across the province and around the world for nine days of wine-related events.
This year, in honour of Canada’s 150th birthday, Canada itself will be the festival’s theme country.
Along with varieties from Nova Scotia and Ontario, Okanagan Valley wines will hold a prominent place in the festival.
“British Columbians take great pride in the quality and growth of our wine industry,” said Coralee Oakes, who oversees the province’s liquor distribution branch.
“Our wine industry has become a mainstay of B.C.’s cultural landscape, and this year’s festival is an excellent opportunity to showcase the best of what Canada and British Columbia have to offer.”
Since 2001 the number of wineries operating in B.C. has ballooned from 70 to more than 330. In total, those wineries contribute $2 billion to the province’s economy and create more than 10,000 jobs.
