Best in roads

Several firms were recognized for their contribution to B.C.’s transportation network at at the 13th annual Deputy Minister’s Consulting Engineers Awards.

B.C.’s consulting engineers are responsible for the design of highway and transportation infrastructure, including roads, bridges and transit infrastructure.

The awards recognize some of the best designs in the province, highlighting the complex and technical nature of the work.

PBX Engineering and IBI Group, both of Vancouver, took the top award for Specialized Engineering Services for their variable speed limit systems.

The system adjusts speed limits on certain highways  to match weather conditions, improving safety on some of the provinces most dangerous stretches of road.

McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd. of Vancouver took the top award for Design and Contract Preparation for its design of the Sicamous roundabout.

Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone said the roundabout was a complex project and praised McElhanney for its quick work incorporating public feedback into its design.

SNC Lavalin Inc. of Metro Vancouver took the top award for Alternative Transportation for the Evergreen Line.

“Thanks to the work of SNC Lavalin Inc., B.C. now has the longest fully automated rapid transit line in the world,” Stone said. “The team delivered a world-class project, and congratulations are owed for their help in keeping British Columbians on the move.”
