A ride-hailing company has put out the call for B.C. drivers.

TappCar, which is already serving three Western Canadian cities, launched its driver recruitment program this week to gauge interest in B.C., which is close to allowing ride-hailing companies to operate.

“Tappcar is pleased to announce today that we are now accepting applications for drivers.  We commend the B.C. government for setting a high standard for driver and passenger safety,” TappCar spokesperson Pascal Ryffel said in a press release. “We are committed to assisting drivers in getting through the registration process.”

TappCar officials met with the B.C. government’s passenger transportation board in Victoria last week, and it is behind the province’s plan to have all ride-hailing drivers maintain a Class 4 passenger licence and undergo regular criminal checks.

It is also pleased with the idea of the government setting a boundary system and possibly installing a cap on the number of licences issued.

“There needs to be a balance, and we’re happy to see that the government of British Columbia understands that,” Ryffel said. “Competition is good, but when major, billion-dollar companies try to steamroll over safety, government and the competition, all sorts of spinoff problems start to arise.

“We’ve seen this play out in other jurisdictions time and time again, resulting in massive traffic congestion on the roads. We’re happy to see British Columbia take a proactive approach to this issue with evidence-based, data-driven decision-making being delegated to the (Passenger Transportation Board).”
