The Ella project will force a block of Ellis Street to be closed for two days this week.

The crane that is currently aiding in the construction of the 20-storey, mixed-use building needs to be extended another 140 feet into the sky. As a result, Ellis between Lawrence and Bernard avenues will be closed between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“That will be the last move that we do to increase the height,” Mission Group project manager Rhonda Greggain said Monday afternoon. “Fingers crossed everything goes perfectly, and then we can turn around and open it up as soon as possible. If we can get it up there and open it sooner, we will.”

Crews are currently working on the 11th storey, and the Mission Group is hopeful all the concrete will be poured by the middle of May.

“We will be doing the topping-out party, where you pour the last of the concrete, in May sometime. Hopefully near mid-May,” Greggain said. “We don’t have an exact date at this time, but that’s what we’re hoping for. So far we’re on schedule.”

Ella, which will have 116 units, is expected to open early next year.
