The weather may not be good for those who are wishing for a white Christmas, but it couldn’t be any better for Burnco Rock Products Ready Mix.

That’s because the West Kelowna company will be up bright and early on Wednesday morning to pour the raft slab for ONE Water Street’s second condominium tower in downtown Kelowna.

“Weather is very favourable for us,” Burnco technical sales representative Nevan Schmuland said Tuesday. “With it being late December and plus-six and sunny is what the forecast is calling for (Wednesday), no complaints on that. Maybe some people might complain that there’s not going to be any snow for Christmas, but in terms of what we’re looking for for concrete temperature and ambient temperature outside, it looks very favourable.”

Schmuland said the job would be called off if it were minus-10 or colder, so there is no concern.

Burnco, which is teaming up with Kelowna Ready Mix and renting other trucks from throughout the Okanagan Valley, will start pouring 2,700 cubic metres of concrete at 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The goal is to have it completed in 14 hours, which is the maximum amount of consecutive time the company’s 45 trucks are allowed to operate.

“If we run into a concern with our driving times then obviously we’re going to stop at a certain point, which is the 2,000-metre mark,” Schmuland said. “If we happen to go over the 2,000-metre mark, it’s the point of no return. We have to finish it, regardless.”

There will be four boom trucks pouring concrete all day. Two of them will be set up on Sunset Drive, which will be closed, and the other two will be on the property. Another boom truck will be on standby if something goes wrong with one of the others. Those driving in the area on Wednesday should expect a slowdown.

The city’s largest single-day concrete pour took place in August when Burnco and Kelowna Ready Mix completed the raft slab for ONE Water Street’s first tower.
