After 18 years operating in West Kelowna, the Quality Greens Farm Market will close its doors for good.

The local grocery chain is known for its freshly made sandwiches and upscale selection of food and local Okanagan products.

It’s West Kelowna store will shut down as of April 27.

Chris Holmes and Lisa Taylor-Holmes are the proprietors of the chain’s West Kelowna location. In a recent message to their customers, they said choosing to close was “very difficult” but ultimately the “right decision.”

The pair hinted at several reasons why they are closing, including in consideration of the “Quality Greens family and the overall health of the group of stores.”

Along with its West Kelowna store, Quality Greens has two stores in Kelowna, one in Penticton, and another in Vernon.

No representatives from Quality Greens immediately responded to requests for more information, but Holmes and Taylor-Holmes said the four other stores will “continue to operate business as usual.”

According to a staff member at the West Kelowna store, the T-Bones Fresh Meat Market attached to the Quality Greens will remain open.

Holmes and Taylor-Holmes said an increasingly competitive business environment was recently made tougher but new innovations in the grocery world, government intervention, and other factors.

“As a small business in the Okanagan we continue to face a very competitive climate with additional headwinds in the marketplace inclusive of home delivery and click-and-collect options, a limited labour force, and the provincial government imposing increased taxes and levies on small businesses in B.C.,” they said.

They also wrote that “many factors have impacted this difficult decision including our own management and ownership decisions.”

They also thanked their “loyal customers” for their support over the years, whom they hope will visit them across the bridge in Kelowna.
